See the moonlight casts a shadow Down across the placid lake As quiet as a whisper on a pillow A formless darkness taking shape What makes the future so forgettable? Who keeps the past there in its place Through the frenzied pace of time untenable Tracing storylines across our face? Upon our face Oh upon our face Tracing storylines upon our face Behold the days behave like cattle Lost like stars against the sun God’s a lonesome cowboy, we’re his saddle We’ll be driving those days til the darkness come Til the darkness come Til the dark has come We'll be driving those days Til the morning sun See the sun has smudged the blackness Where first the lights of morning touch And the sky will host that daily pageant Of purple, crimson, orange and such Like gold and rust Like gold and rust He’ll be driving that herd To the morning sun Where do we begin the journey? Where does the path lay itself low On the western front like a fire burning What daylight left like white hot coal Behold the night in all directions The moon which God hath hung in place With Her left hand like some mirrored reflection To wax and wane and pass in phase Yeah, to pass in phase Oh to pass and fade Over a formless darkness taking shape A formless darkness taking shape It's a formless darkness taking shape

I have reclaimed my tomorrow Yeah, I've seen a holy vision And I have offered up my sorrow Now I am not looking for permission I'm leaving home to find you I hope that you never do forget Or I hope that time still reminds you To savor all of the time that you've got left A shadow takes you by the hand And leads you down that darkening path And if I don’t see your face again That’s just cause I know you won’t look back And a shadow never leaves a track But leaving for good Was so much easier back then And when I’m just so all alone I wonder if I’ll ever see old friends again But when I get there to get you Oh it won’t matter where we’ve been No, all that matters is where I’ve left you And just how I’m gonna make it right again A shadow traced me where I stand And disappear down my darkening path If I don’t see your face again It’s cause I’m still wandering blind in the black And you don’t, you won’t look back But I've found a new tomorrow And I’ll find my way outta prison Oh I am trading up my sorrow And accepting the Lord’s holy mission There’s a certain sort of aching A pain like ripples in the sea Eight billion human hearts all breakin' And they ring those seven bells inside of me A shadow fell across this land It followed us down that darkening path Cause there’s a light that shines in man That the darkness has got to have And when it’s gone you won’t look back
